In response to the inner city’s growing and diversifying population, the City of Melbourne purchased the historic 139-year-old Kathleen Syme building in Carlton to transform into the area’s first-of-its-kind creative, learning and community space. The site was previously used as an education centre for the Royal Women’s Hospital and is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register. Harris HMC’s role was to provide external restoration remaining faithful to the building’s original architecture and internal refurbishment of the whole building. The building is now home to a comprehensive library featuring 40,000 items, as well as learning and training rooms with a computer lab, recording studio, meeting rooms, community activity spaces, café and wi-fi access.
